Dicks and getting deep. This post is not what you think it's about...welll sort of.

Today I finished up watching the new Netflix Serial/Comedy American Vandal. I remember seeing the trailer preview for the show a while back and while I thought it was funny (Yeah, yeah, yeah! I know call me immature.) I also sort of wrote it off as being not worth my time. It seemed like it wouldn't have much depth and looked t be just a long drawn out dick joke. Well, I am writing this to tell you that I wasn't far off in my thoughts. However, I was way off on the depth of the show (no pun intended.) and that it was totally worthy of my time. I won't do a full on review of the show as that is not what this blog is for but I feel a short description of the show is in order if I go further. The show is basically about a high school prankster who gets blamed for Spray painting penises on 27 cars in the staff parking lot. The show is filmed in a documentary style and narrated with a journalistic voice that brought to mind Ira Glass from the radio show This American Life. At first the show comes off as overly immature and comedic, but by the third episode it really begins to show it's true from of being a engrossing whodunnit serial crime drama. The acting is amazing especially by the two lead characters Jimmy Tatro (Dylan Maxwell) and Tyler Alverez (Peter Maldonado). The characters are well developed and easy to feel for or feel about. They nail the high school tropes smack dab on the mark without overdoing it. The part I love best about the show it how well it mixes drama, suspense and humor. The show it's self is shot really really well and feels very real in it's cinematic structure. I will admit that half way through the show I actually did a google search to make sure that this was not a real story. I will honestly say that it is my favorite Netflix show since Stranger Things. It may be hard for some to get through the first episode, and it's not a long watch with only 8 episodes, but if you go at it long enough it does get deep and comes with a satisfying finish that leave you wanting more. And yes, that pun was intended.

PJ Harvey - Long Snake Moan

It saddens me that feeling has fallen to the way side in music. I am not saying that it is gone completely, I see it in artists like Adel or Rhianna's slower songs. The truth is that real feeling in music today has just been homogenized enough to be safe. We are afraid to say what we feel. We ride that fence, tip toeing, hoping that what we say doesn't offend, because we know that someone around the corner is waiting with baited breath to jump out of the darkness and point fingers. Maybe I am just old but people today are too thin skinned. We have lost the ability to deal with emotion, and we are so quick to bring out our pitchforks at even the slightest poke at our ego. I miss feeling in music. In the 90's we had angst, fun, and coolness. It was exciting. In the 80's it was political, experimental, and technological. The 70's were all about having a good time, and rebellion. The 60's were filled with freedom and uniqueness. The last 17 years however have just been bland as far as mainstream music goes. Nothing major, unless you consider dubstep major. Sorry, kids I don't. I miss that feeling, I miss soul in music. The kind of music that makes your insides shout "FUCK YES!!" because you actually feel, and I mean really feel, the music. It's not a vapid nothingness. Again, don't get me wrong here, there are artists that make me feel, it's just that they aren't well known to the masses. It seems that Soul and R&B that once dominated the airwaves in the 60's and 70's is now almost a bygone sound. Sure there is soul and R&B out there but it's severely lacking true feeling, true soul. Let's take recently departed Charles Bradley for instance. His is not a well known name to many people, but I can almost bet that if you listen to the song "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)" you will know exactly what I am trying to say. It's real, it's emotion, it's feeling. We need more of that in this world. We need to make feeling come back. Unfortunately for us, due to Mr. Bradley's passing, we can only revel in what he left behind. The good news is that we can learn a lesson from him, that it's okay to be vulnerable, but in order to be vulnerable you have to be tough. Something which I think is really lost currently. R.I.P Charles.

Real talk time, as if that last blurb wasn't heavy enough. I have been away from doing this blog for a long time. There have been realizations that I came upon recently about my life that I truly feel have kept me from achieving what I want out of life. I'm not saying I have a bad life, because I don't. I have a good group of friends who I love, and love me. Same with my family, they are loving and supportive. I am able to put food on the table and have made it on my own for the past 15ish years. I will say that there have been some rough times and I didn't get dealt the best hand at times, but that is life and I made it this far. So that is the good part. The no so good part is this, I have been hiding behind a mask when it comes to how I really feel. I've never been one to easily convey how I feel, how I truly feel. I like to seem cool calm and collected, and usually I can. When it comes to the the problems I can't be calm about, I do the ol' stuff it down and try to forget trick. Well, as we all know ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. You can try to escape from them, and I got really good at doing that, but it's going to catch you. It also creates a lot of feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, depression etc. I did a lot of things to try to escape those feelings, and to be honest some of them worked so well that I relied on them, and they became habits. Not good ones. The crutches were things I mentioned above, stuffing feelings down, overthinking and irrational thinking, substance abuse, and self isolating. They held me back from who I really was, what I really felt, and who I wanted to be. I don't say this out of pitty, because I think a lot of it is self chosen, albeit on a very subconscious level. Again I feel I need to reiterate that all of this has been going on for a very long time. In the last three years it has really reared it's ugly head, and I feel that I am finally ready to deal with it. For the last few months I have been talking steps to work on the things that are holding me back. I quit indulging in substances that allow me to escape from my problems, I am seeing a professional councilor, I am throwing myself back into the things I once loved, and I am becoming more open and honest with myself and those around me. While this is more than good, I am still at a point where I have a lot of fear, a lot of feeling directionless, and impatience. I worry about losing friends, I worry about failure, I get easily frustrated when I don't see results. I can say that each day I feel I am becoming more at peace with myself, more accepting of the situation, and in turn I am seeing positive results. I am working on this music blog again, which has always been fun and a passion of mine. I am feeling more creative, more motivated, more courage to put myself out there and not be behind that mask. It's been exhausting and a painfully slow process (like molasses slow) but, it's also really cool to see myself unfolding and becoming something different, something better. Do I miss some of the things I did prior to deciding to make this change? Hell yes I do! I've had to keep myself away from places and people I absolutely love to ensure I don't falter. I hope someday soon I can be strong enough to re-visit those places and people, and I hope they understand. Until I feel I am ready though, I have to do me. With that said, lets bring it back to the music. There is a playlist I created almost a year ago that I created to listen to when I get all of those negative feelings. It's filled with songs that understand, and rebuild. Songs that say "Fuck you, I'm not going out like this!" I call it Feel Better Music, and I share this in hopes that it helps someone else.

Cover This

So it's been a while (You should read that in the voice of Arron Lewis from the band Staind...you know the song) since I have posted here. Damn near 3 years, maybe more I didn't pay close attention to the date before starting this post. I'd like to say I am back at it, but you know how that works around here, so I am not going to make any promises I can't keep. Would I like to continue bringing you great music? Hell yes! Am I lazy and forgetful? That also is a resounding "Hell yes!" I will say though that this recent bout of music fever that hit me has been lots of fun. that being said I will do my best to keep this trend going.

Firs of all I want to make you aware that the format here is going to change. Before I would link to a song that you could download. Unfortunately, the service I used to provide the downloads is no longer around. This sucks, but it is also a good thing. I no longer have to worry about providing links to songs and feeling bad about ripping the bands off in a sense. In the last 3 years technology has came a long way. We now have things like Spotify, and YouTube, and the good ol' Googler if you really want to find the music. So what is the format change you ask?   Nothing too crazy. Instead of posting the download files I am just going to make YouTube playlists (RopBopBlog actually has a YouTube channel now! That you can subscribe to! Wowee!)  I figure I'll still write blurbs and pick songs like I used to but I will link to the YouTube videos. Every few weeks I will make a playlist of the best of the best songs that I have posted. That way if you don't like to read my rambling, you don't have to. Of course I will be picking the songs for the playlists, however if you like a song a lot, make a comment on the post. I'll be sure to put it on the playlist. At some point, I will try my hand once again at making a RopBop Podcast, but it's on the back burner for the time being. As always I will be willing to take any suggestions you have for songs, and if you feel so inclined, write a little about the song and what/why you like it. I'll put it up (unless it's extremely crossing the line offensive). I don't want this blog to be all about my tastes in music. There are various ways you can get in contact with me. Leave a comment on this very blog, Send me an e-mail (link in sidebar) or if you know me facebook, text, or talk directly to my face (I mean if you want to talk to my feet you can do that too, but I would be really weirded out by that). That being said...let's get down to business!

I recently created a playlist of cover songs I had laying around. I love a good cover song! Some of these you may know, and some you may not. I would implore you to go and seek out the originals if you don't know a song. It just might lead you to discovering a new jam!

If I was your soundtrack man...

I love movies almost as much as I love music, however there is something amazing that happens when the two go hand in hand. If you have the right song playing in the background of a scene in a movie it can create moment that the viewer will never forget. For example take the opening credits for the movie Pulp Fiction with the song Misirlou by Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, or when Ferris Bueller jums into the parade and lipsyncs Twist And Shout by the Beatles. I always thought it would be a lot of fun to be the guy who comes up with songs for certain songs in movies. So with that in mind I decided to go through my library of music and pick out some songs that I could totally see being used in the movies. I call this mix "A Tarantino Type Thing: Music For A Film". I chose that name because all of his movies have superb soundtracks.

01. Howlin' Wolf - You Gonna Wreck My Life
02. Elvis Presley - Baby Let's Play House
03. Undertones - Teenage Kicks
04. Fergus & Gerinmo - Baby Don't You Cry
05. Little Comets - Joanna
06. Mum - School Song Misfortune
07. J Mascis - Not Enough
08. Suicide - Dream Baby Dream
09. Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
10. The Scientists - We Had Love
11. We Are The World - Fight Song
12. Patrick Wolf - Oblivion
13. Charles Bradley - The World (Is Going Up In Flames)
14. The Dixie Nightingales - All I Need is Some Sunshine in My Life
15. R.E.M. - Country Feedback
16. Eels - Millicent Don't Blame Yourself(Live)
17. Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life
18. The Microphones - I Felt Your Shape

One Hundredth Post!

Today marks the 100th post at Ropbop. When I first started this blog I wasn't really expecting it to grow into what it has. Not saying that it's blown up to epic proportions, but I am happy with the little growth spurt it has had in the last year. I want to thank each and every person who takes time out of their day to check it out. You reading this blog is what keeps me coming back to write more. So thanks for the motivation, the nice comments, and help. With that being said I think it's time to try and phase out a new stage of Ropbop. I would love it if anyone wants to join and write along with me. I can't pay you anything but if you want to do a guest post or write about your favorite songs every now and then, let me know. I'd love it. All you have to do is e-mail me at Ropbopblog@yahoo.com. I might be doing a podcast in the future as well. I guarantee it won't be super professional. That's pretty much it. I hate doing this but if you think someone might dig my blog please send them this way.

It started to snow yesterday, and it made the drive both to work and back home a pain. I was ina 20 minute traffic jam on the way in because there was a car that was being towed on the side of the road that everyone just had to see. It was especially bad when I was going home and it was dark. The road that my work is on was nothing but black ice. Once I got on the highway the roads were clear but very wet. My wipers somehow kept leaving streaks right where I needed to see and the semis were throwing back tons of crap. I must have done something to fix it because about 15 minutes from home they stopped leaving streaks. So much fun. I decided I needed a mix to listen to on those particular snowy drives. So I made one. I picked a lot of songs that made me think of winter. Enjoy.

A RopBop Christmas

Earlier today I had the idea of making posts for the next 5 day until Christmas. I had all the music picked and some blurbs written about the songs. However as I got more an more into it there were just so many songs I wanted to pick. So I decided to just make it a mix and call it my Christmas gift to you. I tried to keep interesting with some classics, some lesser known stuff and some favorites of mine. I am trying something new with the mixes. Instead of posting each individual track I am putting it into a .zip file. so you need to have something that can unzip it. Sort of like taking off a coat. If you have problems or can't unzip it but really want the mix let me know and I'll figure something out. I hope everyone has a safe and rockin' holiday. Merry Christmas and God bless!

RopBopWeHopeSummerDon'tEverStop Mix

For the last 5 years I have created a mix that contains songs that I think are the perfect soundtrack for those hot days and cool nights of summer. They actually have turned out quite nice and have become some of my favorite mixes I have made (not to toot my own horn or anything). I could post them all and just give a few tracks and list the rest but I think what I am going to do is do a best of sort of thing. So here it is the first official full length mix made especially for RopBop titled RopBopWeHopeSummerDon'tEverStop! I'll post the songs separate but you should listen to them all in order since it is a mix. If you want a downloadable version of the whole mix, or a copy let me know.

You can't have a good summer mix with out hand claps. I like to think of this song as a good summer song to wake up to.
1.)T.Rex - Ride The White Swan

This song is funny especially the part about the cow. This one also has that morning air about it. It makes me think of seeing the sun glinting off of the morning dew.
2.)The Mountain Goats - Cheshire County (Peel Session On Mix)

Simple, not to hard on the ears and also something to make you smile and still has that whole waking up still vibe.
3.)Herman Dune - Seven Cities (No Longer Available)

Just an amazing song in every way and screams summer.
4.)Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes

This is one of my staple workout songs. Maybe not a summer song lyricaly but it's happy, has a kid chorus, and a beat that makes me want to move.
5.)Passion Pit - Little Secrets

"Come and open up your folding chair next to me/My feet are buried in the sand and there's a breeze" I am quickly falling in love with Regina, listen to this song and do the same.
6.)Regina Spektor - Folding Chair

For some reason I always associate traffic back ups with summertime. Maybe it's because of all the construction, maybe it's because of all the people out on vacation, maybe it's because of this bands name and this song title.
7.)Two Hours Traffic - Stuck For The Summer

Another song that screams summer. The original version is pretty neat but I think Dr.Dog kills it with their tropical take. Put down the top, don the shades and jump on that strip next to the beach.
8.)Dr.Dog - Heart It Races (Architecture In Helsinki Cover)

This ones isn't so much lyrically about summer but how can you not love the singing and the pounding drums. This song is like a rhythmic fireworks display with soul.
9.)Florence and The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

This song is nothing short of pure excellence. Lyrics about rivers and streams and fire and a backwoods feel. Perfect song for floating down a river.
10.)Akron/Family - The River
If you visited a psychic city and this was their theme song I bet they'd predict that you will have this song stuck in your head and you might have to pee while listening to it.
11.)YAHCT - Psychic City

I always have the feeling that I have used this song before when putting it on mixes for people and even when I decided to post it here. High voices, hand claps and pop-punk fun are always winners.
12.)Travoltas - C'mon Rock City (No Longer Available)

This song is laid back, easy to learn. "Nothing feels good like you in red and blue jeans and your white and night things, doo doo (lotta times)"
13.)The Promise Ring - Red And Blue Jeans

WOOHOO! Yeah! Hippie Music! I love this song so much. I don't know who Uncle John is but I want to join his band, unless he's a dirty uncle. Dirty. Hippie. Get it?!
14.)The Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band

Ahh, this one reminds me of sitting in a rocking chair on the porch of a run down house on a dirt road.
15.)Ray LaMontagne - Hey Me, Hey Mama

I have always been a HUGE Bright Eyes fan and I think every summer mix should include a Bright Eyes song especially if it's from Lifted
16.)Bright Eyes - Bowl Of Oranges

This will always remain one of my favorite songs to smoke to.
17.)Neva Dinova - Poison

M.Ward is a genius songwriter. This song is great for when the sun is just about gone and there is barely any daylight left.
18.)M. Ward - Chinese Translation

A summer fling played this song for me and told me that it made her think of me. The first time I heard it she played it over the phone, which made it even cooler.
19.)The Microphones - Oh Anna

Perfect night time song.
20.)Nick Drake - Pink Moon

Perfect not slow and not boring night time ending track.
21.)Kid Cudi - Heaven At Night
