Coverwise
I have had this great cover by Her Space Holiday laying around for a while now. I was going to put it on a cover mix that I have been working on (it's coming soon) but I think I am just going to post it. There is reason behind this. The start and end of this song have clips taken from a movie. Last night I decided to finally look up where the clips came from, and I am so glad I did. The clips come from a 1984 documentary called Streetwise. The doc is a look into the lives of street kids in Seattle, Washington. To say that this is a powerful film would be an understatement. From the very first line I was hooked the entire time. The film follows kids ranging from 13-17 who are runaways, homeless, or just plain have bad family life and their struggle to survive on the streets. I don't want to say too much about it because it's a film that I really think everyone should see, but I will say it's not a "light" movie. It will definitely keep you thinking long after you have watched it. It's not easy to track down a copy, but if you ever see it,grab it. It's totally worth it. Also check out the original version of this song by Wolf Parade, because it friggin' rocks!
Her Space Holiday - I'll Believe In Anything (Wolf Parade Cover)
I tried to do a Google Translate to post the english translation and here is what I got...
"Looks like I'll tell you ... That tonight
I did mourn ... With your answer
Because you did not come did not come ... ahhhh ...
You did not come ... You did not come ... oohhh ahhh ahhh
ahh ahh ahh ah ah ah ahh ahh ahh ahhh oooh ah ah ah
Not as you say, that so often
I loved you say ... ahh ... ahh ahhh I loved you
But did not come did not come ... ahhh
You did not come ... You did not come ... ahhh
I would like to wait ... until the end
But I get to come ... but you get to come
I would like to wait, go for you ... without you
But have you cost me the next day Sunday and miss three days
finish this ...
did not come (x15)"
Sort of makes sense. It doesn't really matter though because this is a beautiful cover.
Carla Morrison - No Viniste (Natalia Lafourcade Cover)
I'm moving to a new team at work, and the team leader there is a pretty cool kid. He sent a "getting to know you" e-mail to the new team members and he mentioned that his favorite song was a song by the band Beach House. I wrote that I dug Tom Waits and he responded back telling me that he loved Tom WaWts too. He is a pretty funny guy too he will randomly send out e-mails about animals that have no true facts but are hilarious to read. I think we are going to get along just fine. I am sad though because my current team lead is so awesome, she's the kind of supervisor that one dreams of having. She has your back no matter what, makes things fun, super helpful, and is a great resource of knowledge. In fact I had a monthly review with her and she told me I was doing very good and then the rest of the time we just sat and shot the shit. Turns out she is a Tom waits fan as well.
The Cottars - Hold On (Tom Waits Cover) (No Longer Available)
This song was written by singer/songwriter Doc Pomus who had penned a number of hits through out the 50's and 60's. His most notable work include the songs Viva Las Vegas, A Teenager in Love, Save The Last Dance For Me, my pick for today, This Magic Moment, and many others. The song was originally preformed by Ben E. King with The Drifters in 1960 and hit the billboard top 100 that same year. I like the original but I absolutely love this cover that Lou Reed did for Docs tribute album. This cover is also on the soundtrack for the David Lynch film Lost Highway.

Lets end This cover post with a boss cover of the Boss.

If you show me your fanny pack....
A while ago I decided to break out my copy of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I had not listened to the album in a few years and I was instantly reminded how how much I love this band. I did not know that the album was that old, it came out in 1998, which was the year I graduated. I wish I had known about this band back then so I might have at least had a chance to see them play live. All I can do now is watch Youtube clips of their live shows, which are amazing by the way. This band put forth an energy that I would have loved to be a part of. This B-Side is the B side to the song Holland, 1945, and it's just as good as any track on that album. Enjoy!
Neutral Milk Hotel - Engine
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has really made a name for himself in the last year. He was great in Inception and from what I have heard his new movie 50/50 is getting pretty good reviews as well, it's 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even in his younger days he was hilarious as the alien son in 3rd Rock From The Sun. I have to admit that I saw 500 Days Of Summer and I loved him there too, of course there was only one reason I really wanted to see it. Hmmm...could it be because I have a crush on Mrs. Zooey Deschanel? I think so. Ben Gibbard is a lucky lucky man, but I digress. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is awesome. However he is not only an accomplished actor, he's also a pretty good singer. Check out this sweet cover of I Don't Want To Live On The Moon orgianlly sung by Ernie from Sesame Street.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - I Don't Want To Live On The Moon (Sesame Street Cover)
Vincents vocals remind me a lot of Bon Iver's frontman Justin Vernon. A pretty falsetto. I would say this is a club song for the sad emo kids. It doesn't makes me want to whip my hair back and forth so much, but it does makes me want to get down to some sensual love making.
James Vincent Mcmorrow - Whip My Hair (Willow Smith Cover)
Speaking of getting down...
Zach Galifianakis - Come On and Get It (Up In 'dem Guts) Feat. Fiona Apple
Get ready to feel really happy!
Mouth's Cradle - Honey From A Stone
I love singing along with this band, at least the words I can make out. This is a sloppy drunken self loathing song that might make you feel better by the end.
Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - Buriedfed

The Letter F
Hey! I'm on vacation! I'm a people!
Foreign Born - Vacationing People
Um....what? These lyrics are sort of messed up, but that is what happens when you fight, stuff gets messed up. Never the less, an amazing bluesy song by a woman with a powerful voice that will smack you in the face!
Florence and The Machine - Kiss With A Fist
This song sounds like it could have came straight out of the Motown 60's when soul and R&B dominated. Surprisingly this amazing throwback is only a few years old. If that bass line doesn't get you, I suggest you check your pulse.
Fitz and The Tantrums - Breakin' the Chains of Love
Mmm, Swedish girls covering some mountain man music. I like very much! Also I should get double points because not only is this a "F" band but it's also a cover of an "F" band. musicnerdpoweractivate!
First Aid Kit - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Fleet Foxes Cover)
I will quite often play this song just before going to bed.
The Fugitives - French Tattoo

Girl Power
The first time I heard of the Doubleclicks was from one of the many podcasts that I listen to. The song Technical Writer was used as the background music for a show called The Phone Show which I have talked about before. The song got stuck in my head due to it being played for most of the hour long show, but I am so glad it was played repeatedly. This Portland duo creates nerdy folk music backed mostly by cello and ukulele. By nerdy I mean these girls are hardcore geeks, they have songs about video games, internet breakups, a love of star trek and dungeons and dragons. These are the kind of girls I would marry in a heartbeat. Look them up on Youtube and you will find tons of songs by them.
The Doubleclicks - Technical Writer
Lana Del Rey has been all over the music blogs as of late and a for good reason. I honestly could see her taking the throne and reigning as the new indie queen (look out Regina Spektor). She's got a fresh approach to her music it's not groundbreaking but it is noticeably different, you can tell that a lot of time was spent perfecting and polishing. Add on her soft sultry melt like butter vocals and you got a sure winner. Seriously watch out for this woman in the coming months.
Lana Del Rey - Video Games
Fun Fact: Alynda Lee Segarra, the creative force behind the band, ran away from home at 17 and hopped freight trains for a time.
Hurray For The Riff Raff - Bricks
I love this strings in this song, absolutely beautiful. I always loved Canadian girls.
Jenn Grant - Blue Skies
Lets add something a little bit more danceable. How about a song written by a great man, covered by a electro pop princess from the UK, and remixed by Buffetlibre?
Little Boots - Love Kills (Freddy Mercury Cover)
Last but not least, I can not have an all girls post and leave out my favorite female singer, Neko Case.
Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
